Policies
Grades and transcripts
This policy explains how work is graded, how academic standing is calculated, and how to obtain a transcript.
Draft in progress
We are finalising this policy.
Read it and tell us what to sharpen. Where a figure is still being set, we name the decision rather than publish a number we would have to change.
The grading scale
Every assessment is graded against published criteria supplied with the assessment. Course grades combine assessment grades in the proportions stated in the course description.
The letter grades, their percentage ranges and their grade point values are set out in the table below, and are the same across every programme.
Being finalised in this section
- The full letter grade scale, with percentage bands and grade point values
- The pass mark at each level
- Whether a plus and minus scale is used
Grade point average
A grade point average is the average of grade points earned, weighted by the credit value of each course. It is reported per term and cumulatively.
Being finalised in this section
- The minimum cumulative average required to remain in good standing, by level
Academic standing
A student whose performance falls below the required standard is placed on academic probation and told so in writing, with what is required to return to good standing and by when.
Probation is a support measure and comes with an academic advising conversation. A student who does not meet the requirements of probation within the stated period may be dismissed under the suspension and dismissal policy.
Incomplete work and resubmission
Where a student cannot complete a course for reasons outside their control, an incomplete grade may be recorded, with a deadline by which the outstanding work must be submitted.
Being finalised in this section
- The maximum period an incomplete may stand before it converts to a fail
- Whether a failed course may be retaken, how often, and how the grade is recorded
Transcripts
A transcript is the official record of the courses you have taken, the grades awarded, and any qualification conferred. It is issued by the university on request.
Transcripts are released to the student, and to a third party only with the student's written consent, as set out in the privacy and student records policy.
Being finalised in this section
- How a transcript is requested, and any fee
- How long a request takes
- Whether transcripts are withheld where fees are outstanding
